Unique nature is in the well-known Obri dul (Giant valley).

Pec pod Snezkou - history

Pec pod Snezkou is surrounded by many hills and peaks. There is wooded Ruzova mountain in the norheast (1300 m above sea level), three highest mountains of the Giant Mountian in the north: Snezka Mountain (1602 meters above sea level), Studnicni Mountain (1554 meters above sea level) and Lucni Mountain (1547 meters above sea level). Zadni Planina and Lisci Mountain are west from the town. Hill Javor almost closes the circle and between this hill and Ruzova Mountain flows the Upa River.

The first settlement of Pec pod Snezkou was th mining settlement in Obri dul (Giant Valley). First official mention about mining is from 1511. Especially copper ores and arsenopyrite used to be mined here. The minerals mining in Pec continued with some breaks until 1959, when the mining was stopped definitely (after more than 450 years). The town Pec arose at the end of the 16th century (as the third part of Velka Upa), thanks large woodcutting for mines in Kutna Hora. Woodcutters from Steiemark, Karnten and Tirol were invited to the Giant Mountains. They built their houses (so called chalets) and farmed cattle and goats. Bloom of tourism in the second half of the last century got new source of livelihood to the settlers. At first, tourists were accommodated on hays, later adjusted inhabitants their houses for room rent and so started up chalets, bed&breakfasts and hotels.
