Tourism Giant Mountains
The mound above Vrbatova bouda on the Golden Hill, recalls the tragic event of 24.3. 1913, when the Czech racer Bohumil Hanč and his friend Václav Vrbata, who tried to come to his aid, died in a snowstorm during a 50 km ski race.
The stone mound was built on the ridge of the Giant Mountains above Vrbatová bouda in memory of the tragically deceased friends of Václav Vrbat and our then best ski racer Bohumil Hanč. Both men died in the 50 km race, which took place on March 24, 1913. Vrbata gave Hanč his coat while trying to save him, although he knew he was putting his own life on the line. Since then, March 24 has been worshiped as the Day of the Mountain Service of the Czech Republic.
The mound was built by members of the Czech Giant Mountains Association SKI Jilemnice and the Czech Ski Club Hradec Králové in 1925. It was damaged during the war and repaired again in 1947.
The Golden Hill ridge is located about 2.5 km northwest of Horní Mísečky. The back is formed by staples with quartz inserts. The attentive eye of a geologist will find numerous forms of frost weathering here, especially the rocky seas on the north-eastern steep slope. In winter, an avalanche track to the Elbe valley forms on the steep northeastern slopes.
View from the Hanče and Vrbaty mounds
From the Hanče and Vrbata mounds, there is a unique view of the Elbe Mine, on the edge of which stands the much-discussed Elbe Hut building. Above it rises the unmistakable tip of Violík, on the right you can see the typical silhouette of the U Sněžných jam hut. It has housed a television and radio transmitter since 1960. Snow pits are a nature reserve of two glaciers with a depth of 215 m with cracked granite walls. About halfway between Sněžné jáma and Sněžka, you can see the outline of the newly built Petrova bouda.
