10.02.2022 - 31.03.2022
When: 20 January 2022 - 31 March 2022 | 8:00 - 17:00
Where: Labský důl
You can find one of them in Labské důl in Krkonoše, which you can also, after prior reservation, quite "climb". Icefall is not recommended for beginners and strict rules apply.
The climbing area consists of a rock, about 20 m high, located in the Labský důl off the road on the right bank of the river Elbe at the end of the groomed cross-country trail Be fit (blue sign leading from Špindlerův Mlýn to Labské dol). This is covered by an icefall with a thickness of several cm to tens of cm. As the icefall is located in the 2nd zone and in the immediate vicinity of the 1st KRNAP zone, strict rules apply for ice climbing and you will not find any pub or cottage near the icefall.
Difficulty of climbing
WI (Water Ice) is a scale that is more focused on climbing ice formations and frozen waterfalls, often outside alpine environments. The actual WI levels express the difficulty of climbing in ice, at higher levels the plus (+) and minus (-) signs are used for finer division.
The difficulty of the icefall at Be Fit is WI3 – WI4
What does it mean?
WI3: The ice is inclined at 70-80 ° and is compact. Steep passages are alternated with places to rest, where there is a good opportunity to establish security.
WI4: The constant slope of the ice is 80 °, the icicles are small.
Access to the icefall:
If you do not use the bus, leave your car in one of the car parks in Špindlerův Mlýn. From the information center of the KRNAP Administration, where you pick up your permit, you will cross the bridge over the Elbe to the Elbe Mine and continue along the Be Fit road (blue sign) for about 4 km in the direction of the Elbe Hut. The path consists of a modified cross-country track, so please use skis or snowshoes to move. If you still walk, walk along the edge of the road and do not destroy the trail. At the end of the modified section, it is necessary to cross the river Elbe. A stretched steel rope can be used for this purpose at your own risk. An unpaved access path leads to the rock through loose forest stands (approx. 200 m). It is marked with colored streamers in the field, but it may be more difficult to orientate due to certain interplay of climatic factors. Stay on the access path and do not walk new paths.
